Abstract The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with conventional web search—exemplified by tools such as Perplexity AI’s Deep Research, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Deep Research, Google Gemini, and xAI’s Grok DeepSearch—has fundamentally transformed information retrieval and synthesis. These systems perform dozens to hundreds of searches, analyze sources, and generate structured reports autonomously, compressing tasks that once required hours or days into minutes. This paper examines how these advancements reshape the roles of independent researchers (often unaffiliated or self-funded) and professional research analysts (e.g., in equity, market, or policy domains).
