Sampling issues in internet research 07 Apr 2015 02:56 #168

The main reason that I understand is the 'generalization' factor. Which means, if proper sampling is not done, it is impossible to generalize the findings to the entire research population. When it is difficult to generalize, the researcher is also unable to make a sensible deduction out of the results in relation to the study population.

Why does this whole issue of 'sampling' in research matters so much?

I agree. Also in an internet space we exclude non internet users and there is also the concern of identity of participants (not sure whether a child is participating as an adult or a man as a woman). Actually the researcher does not have any control of these issues when conducting an online survey.

Yes, although online surveys may seem to be more economical and easier to administer than traditional survey research methods, they pose problems in obtaining scientifically valid and accurate results. Basically for a study to be unbiased, every member of the population should have an equal chance of participating in the survey. This cannot be achieved in an internet environment because there is no 'master list' to obtain a representative sample.

I've been told that sampling in an online surveys has its own problems. Is it true?
