This course is an introduction to copyright, both the principles involved and the issues faced on a day-to-day basis. It also sets the groundwork for those enrolled in the Certificate in Copyright Management: Principles and Issues program. Topics covered include:

  • how and why copyright is falling into the hands of non-lawyers, especially librarians and information professionals
  • who is responsible and liable for copyright compliance?
  • what copyright management means (generally and in the context of your enterprise)
  • the importance of copyright compliance "at home" and around the world
  • demystifying copyright myths (and there are many!)
  • reading and understanding news relating to copyright court cases, studies and legislation
  • basic copyright law principles
  • the lingo of copyright (for example, What is copyright? What is a license?)
  • distinguishing copyright law from other areas of intellectual property
  • the concept of "gray" areas and "it depends" answers to copyright questions
  • working with and without an attorney, and gaining independence in copyright management
  • learning the art of copyright management
  • defining copyright management and compliance
  • developing a plan to deal with copyright issues
