Where Big Data Jobs Will Be In 2016

  1. The advertised salary for technical professionals with big data expertise and in-demand skills is $124,000 net of bonuses and compensation.
  2. IBM IBM +0.17% (NYSE:IBM), Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) and Oracle ORCL -0.68%(NYSE:ORCL) together advertised 26,488 open positions that required big data expertise in the last twelve months.
  3. EMC EMC +% (Dell ) has 25.1% of all available big data positions that WANTED Analytics tracks.
  4. VMWare, data warehousing and Python programming expertise are the skill sets growing the fastest in companies expanding their big data development teams.

    These and other insights into the current and future direction of big data hiring trends was completed using the series of talent & strategic analytics applications from WANTED Analytics, a CEB Company. The company currently maintains a database of more than one billion unique job listings and is collecting hiring trend data from more than 150 countries.



    Key take-aways include the following:

    • The Hiring Scale is 73 for jobs that require big data skills with 13 candidates per job opening as of November 16, 2015.  The higher the Hiring Scale score, the more difficult it is for employers to find the right applicants for open positions. Nationally an average job posting for an IT professional with Big Data-related expertise is open just 47 days.

    • The median advertised salary for professionals with big data expertise is $124,000 a year. Sample jobs in this category include Software Engineer, Big Data Platform Engineer, Information Systems Developer, Platform Software Engineer, Data Quality Director, and many others.  The distribution of median salaries across all industries shown below:


    • The top five industries hiring big data-related expertise include Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (30%), Information Technologies (19%), Manufacturing (18%), Finance and Insurance (10%) and Retail Trade (8%).     • San Jose – Sunnyvale – Santa Clara, CA, San Francisco – Oakland – Fremont, CA and New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island are the top three U.S. big data employment markets.
