Tips to Stay Focused in the Process of Essay Writing

By  Alex Graferd

How to Stay Focused When You Write an Essay

One of the most common problems students face when writing essays and other papers are the inability to concentrate. It is not that they do not want to finish their job – they simply fail to maintain focus for long periods, which is usually what you have to do to write a paper. One may argue what this inability stems from, but it does not make the problem any less difficult. What is much more interesting is this: can one influence one’s ability to concentrate? Can you condition yourself to be more attentive when you do your research and write your academic assignments? We believe that you can, and in this article, we will cover some of how you can improve the situation.

1. Get Rid of Distractions

We live in a world chock-full of constant distractions, ranging from conversations with friends and family members to a well-ingrained habit of checking our smartphones every few minutes. All these distractions are not conducive to effective work, especially when dealing with work that requires complete concentration for prolonged periods, like essay writing.

Therefore, you should make it harder for yourself to follow the temptation. Turn off your smartphone. Do not go online unless you have to look up specific information. Ask your family members not to distract you while you write. Put on noise-canceling headphones to filter out outside sounds.

2. Hire an Editor

While it will not improve your focus per se, it will still improve the quality of your editing. You cannot be as efficient and effective when editing your own writing as a completely independent person who sees the text for the first time. After all, you are the one who has written it. You are subconsciously inclined to skip over parts of the text because you know what they contain. In other words, you can never be as good an editor of your own writing as an equally qualified person who sees it for the first time. Therefore, hiring somebody else to edit your essay effectively improves the focus of the one who edits it. Of course, you will probably not be able to hire a research paper editor free of charge, but you do want to improve your efficiency, right? There are many services where you can hire such specialists, which means you will have no trouble finding somebody to help you.

3.  Take Regular Breaks

You are free to try and work for 6 hours in a row, but it will not be very efficient. The longer you spend working, the less focused you are. On the contrary, if you take regular breaks (e.g., 10 minutes after every 45 minutes of work) and take breaks only at predetermined moments, you will be able to maintain concentration. As long as you know you will be able to take a breather soon, it is easy to keep your focus, even if you spend a greater amount of time working in total.

4.  Get Enough Sleep

When you have to complete a great deal of work fast, you may be tempted to cut back on the amount of sleep. After all, the longer you spend up and about, the more you will be able to do! Right? Only up to a point. Different people require different amounts of sleep (there is even special software that can help you calculate the optimized amount specifically for you). If you sleep less than your optimal amount, you may have more waking hours a day, but your efficiency during these hours will take a hit. The less you sleep after a certain limit, the poorer your ability to maintain focus becomes. In other words, trying to do more by sleeping less is usually a bad idea.

5. Stop Multitasking

Doing several different things simultaneously (or, rather, trying to do them) often makes you feel productive. You are on a roll; you get so many things done at once! Unfortunately, numerous studies show that, in reality, multitasking leads to poorer focus, a higher rate of fatigue, and lower overall productivity. Keeping it up for prolonged periods can lead to burnout, breaking down your productivity altogether.

Always strive to do one thing at a time, giving it your full attention. Trying to combine multiple unrelated tasks is a recipe for disaster.

Focus is an important component of effective, engaging, and rewarding work in any area, especially when it comes to intellectual activities like essay writing. Follow our tips, and we are sure you will be able to improve both the quality of your texts and the speed at which you produce them.
