Apple’s iOS platform has a wonderfully simple and intuitive UX, but the platform continues to grow more and more complex with each passing year. The iPhone is the kind of device that just about anyone can pick up and figure out how to use quickly, and yet it also hides all sorts of nifty features and functions that even the most savvy users probably don’t know about.

Learning about cool secret features that are hiding in your iPhone is always fun because it makes your phone feel fresh and new, if even for a moment. We’re going to run through 10 little-known iPhone tricks in this post. Even if you already know about some of them, we guarantee you’ll learn something new.

Delete text faster: When you tap and hold the backspace key on the iPhone’s keyboard, the delete rate speeds up after a while. But here’s a trick we bet you didn’t know — if you press harder on the backspace key on any iPhone with 3D Touch, it’ll speed up instantly. Deleting will also slow back down if you release some of the pressure.

Quickly and easily turn off the flashlight: Being able to turn on the iPhone’s flashlight from Control Center while the phone is locked is super convenient. But having to swipe back in and tap the button again to turn it off can be annoying, especially when your hands are full. Instead, simply start to swipe our lock screen to the left like you’re opening the camera, but only swipe a tiny bit and then let go. Your phone will think you’re opening the camera app and the flash will turn off.

As someone who walks a dog late at night every day, I can confirm that this trick definitely comes in handy when you’ve got an iPhone 7 Plus in one hand and a bag full of in the other.

See all open Safari tabs: Isn’t that cascading list of Safari tabs annoying? Instead of scrolling around looking for something, turn your phone to landscape while on any tab. Then pinch the screen like you’re zooming out on a photo, and you’ll see all of your open tabs like this:

Open Spotlight in any app: Sometimes you want to search your phone without opening the Notification Center. You can — with any app open, just pull down from the top of the screen like you’re opening Notification Center, but stop when just the search field is visible and you feel a little haptic vibration.

Easy package tracking: Did someone send you a package and then text you the tracking number? Tap and hold on the tracking number in the Messages app and an option will pop up right there to track it.

Prioritize app downloads: Via Reddit, did you know you could prioritize your app downloads? If you’re in the middle of downloading and/or updating a whole bunch of apps but there’s one in particular you need, just 3D Touch the icon and you’ll get this menu:

Infinite zoom on any photo: It’s kind of annoying that you can only zoom in to a certain point on photos you capture on your iPhone. Check this out — tap the edit button, crop the photo just a tiny little bit, and save it. Now you can zoom in infinitely! Things start to get a little weird after you zoom in too far, so try not to get lost.

Search for words on a webpage: Okay, this one is HUGE. Most people have no idea that you can actually search for words on a webpage in mobile Safari just like you can in a desktop browser. One any webpage, type the word you’re looking for in the URL bar but don’t tap “Go.” Instead, scroll down and you’ll see an option to search for the word, and you can then tap through each instance. Here, you can see that I searched for the word “echo”:

Close all Safari tabs at once: This is a big one for people who leave tons of tabs open and decide they need to start fresh. Just tap and hold on the tab switcher button in the bottom-right corner in Safari, no 3D Touch needed. A little menu will then pop up and give you the option to close all tabs.

Drag share sheet options to rearrange them: Here’s another trick that comes courtesy of Reddit. If you want to quickly reorder your options on the iOS share sheet, simply tap on one and drag it around. Here’s a screenshot that shows how it works:

It might not be tomorrow. It might not even be five years from now. But some day, Apple’s iOS platform will support home screen widgets. Apple’s unique iOS widget implementation is thought of by some as offering the best of both worlds. Widget support is there and it’s somewhat versatile, but widgets are buried off screen, forcing users to swipe to the right on either the lock screen or the first home screen in order to access the widget pane. On one hand, this allows iOS to support widgets without causing a big drain on the battery. On the other, it means zero-touch access to information, which is arguably the best thing about mobile widgets, is not possible.

Since iOS 10 widgets are hidden off screen, many people don’t even both using the feature. But we’re here to tell you that it’s time to give widgets another shot on your iPhone — and in this post, we’ll show you 10 iOS 10 widgets that should be installed on every iPhone.

recent thread on Reddit made me realize how often I actually do use widgets. I was pretty skeptical of how useful iOS widgets would be when Apple first introduced them, considering how limited their utility was (and still is). Though they are indeed limited compared to Android widgets, iOS 10 widgets can still be incredibly useful.

Whether or not you currently use any widgets on your iPhone, you’ll find links to 10 different iOS 10 widgets that you should definitely check out below.

AirLaunch Pro

This is easily one of my favorite iOS 10 widgets. It allows you to create a wide range of custom actions that are all accessible with a single tap from within an AirLaunch widget. Examples of how I use the widget include accessing the iPhone’s hotspot and VPN features each with a single touch, and copying my address to the clipboard so I can quickly and easily paste it into an email or elsewhere. Of course, that’s just the tip of the iceberg with this nifty app.

Nearby Traffic

Everyone uses the Google Maps app, but did you know there are a bunch of useful iOS 10 widgets baked in? The Nearby Traffic widget gives you instant access to information about traffic around your current location.

Nearby Transit

Another great iOS 10 widget baked into Google Maps is the Nearby Transit widget, which makes it insanely easy to find public transit nearby.

Fantastical 2

The best calendar widget in the App Store, hands down.

Copied

Copied is a great clipboard manager that saves things you copy to your clipboard so you can access more than just the last text you copied.

Workflow

Workflow is an endlessly useful automation app, and the widget is just as endlessly useful as the app itself.

Deliveries

This app makes it incredibly simple to track all of the packages en route to your home or office, and now you don’t even have to open the app to get updates.

Stocks Widget

This free widget lets you see what your entire portfolio is doing in near real time with a single swipe to your widget panel.

MiniStats

This nifty widget shows you information such as how much cellular data you’ve used in your current billing cycle.

Dark Sky

The best iOS weather app also packs one of the best iOS 10 weather widgets. Instead of blasting you with all kinds of weather data you don’t need, Dak Sky shows you the current weather conditions, the day’s high and low, and the likelihood of precipitation for the next hour.

BONUS

I didn’t list this among the 10 widgets above since not everyone has an August Smart Lock, but if you do have one, you absolutely must check out the widget. Instead of having to fumble with the app on your phone or your Apple Watch, the August widget lets you either lock or unlock your Smart Lock with a single tap.

iOS 10 problems continue to plague iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users as we head into 2017. If you’ve run into an iOS 10 problem on your device try a fix from this list before taking your device down to the local Apple Store.

The iOS 10 beta killed off some nasty bugs but iOS 10 problems slipped through the cracks. To combat these issues, Apple’s released several bug fix updates including iOS 10.1 (a major update) and the iOS 10.1.1 update (a minor bug fixer).

The software is improved from where it was in September but iOS 10 problems continue to linger on the latest version of the operating system.

How to send handwritten messages in iOS 10.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise. iOS updates, even updates that go through Apple’s extensive beta process, are always riddled with problems. Problems with services, apps and performance are extremely common.

iOS 10.1.1 owners are reporting these problems and a host of others and today we want to help them (and you) solve your issue.

We don’t know when Apple will release its next iOS 10 update. So, if you’re dealing with a problem on iOS 10, iOS 10.0.1, iOS 10.0.2, iOS 10.0.3, iOS 10.1, or iOS 10.1.1 you’re on your own until Apple pushes out whatever is next. (An iOS 10.2 update is confirmed and will likely arrive in December.)

This list of common iOS 10 problems comes with fixes that have been passed down over the years. All of them are proven fixes. Dig into these before you take your device down to the local Apple Store.

How to Fix iOS 10 Installation Problems

The most common installation issue is one where the download/installation process gets stuck/frozen. A number of prospective iOS 10 users already encountered this problem and we expect the issue to be a problem throughout the iOS 10 update’s lifespan.

Fortunately, there’s a very simple fix that should jumpstart the installation process on your iPhone, iPad and/or iPod touch.

If your iOS 10 download gets stuck, hold down the home button and the power button (volume down and power button on the iPhone 7/iPhone 7 Plus) at the same time to perform a reset. Your device should power down automatically within 10 seconds.

It will then turn itself back on and you should be able to get through the iOS 10 download/installation process.

How to Fix iOS 10 Bluetooth Problems

Bluetooth problems are among the most common iOS issues and we’ve already seen a ton of complaints about iOS 10 Bluetooth issues in the early going.

iOS 10.1.1 users are reporting broken Bluetooth connections with speakers, headsets, and Bluetooth audio in the car. These problems can be a bit tricky to fix but we do have some remedies that should dislodge the issue(s), at least temporarily.

First, try forgetting your Bluetooth connection. To forget a Bluetooth connection on your device go to Settings > Bluetooth > Select your connection using the circular blue i tab > Tap Forget this Device. After this is complete, try reconnecting.

If you still can’t connect, it’s time to take more drastic measures. First, try resetting your device’s network settings. To do that, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. It will take a few seconds to complete and your device will forget known Bluetooth devices. Reconnect and try again.

If it’s still busted, reset all of your settings. This has worked for us and others in the past and it’s worth a shot if nothing is working.

To do this go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. The will take a few minutes to complete and after it’s done your device’s settings will be restored to factory defaults. Make sure you have Wi-Fi passwords handy because your device will forget them.

If these steps fail you, consult the manual for your Bluetooth device, and if you need to, the manual for your car.

If you’re having issues with Bluetooth in your car and you can’t find a manual fix, you might need to bring it into a dealer/specialist to see if they can diagnose the problem. You might need to do more than forget Bluetooth networks.

How to Fix iOS 10 Battery Life Problems

Surprise, surprise. Some iOS 10 owners are running into battery life problems after installing the latest update. Battery life problems are among the most common iOS problems and they will plague iOS 10 users for months to come.

If you’re seeing iOS 10 battery life issues and you just downloaded iOS 10, wait a few days before doing anything major. It sometimes takes a couple of days for new updates to settle in.

If for some reason you notice abnormal battery drain on your iPhone or iPad after two days or so, it’s time to take action.

We’ve put together a list of fixes for common iOS 10 battery life problems. These fixes have worked for us and many others and they’re worth a look if you want to fix the problem from your computer chair rather than at an Apple Store.

If you’re dealing with a busted iPhone 6s battery, you might be able to get a replacement from Apple. To determine if you’re eligible for a replacement, check Apple’s guide to see if you’re eligible.

How to Fix iOS 10 Wi-Fi Problems

iOS 10 users are running into an assortment of problems with Wi-Fi. Here’s how you can try and fix broken Wi-Fi on iOS 10.

Before you start fiddling with iOS 10 and your settings, we recommend looking into your router/modem situation.

If you suddenly run into problems on a known network, try unplugging the router for a solid minute before plugging it back in.

You might also check to see if there is a firmware update though many routers will install updates automatically. Each router is different so you’ll need to consult your manual on how to do this.

If you can’t access the router or you’re positive it has nothing to do with it, it’s time to dig into iOS 10 on your device.

Verizon-WiFi-Calling-iOS-9.31

If you run into Wi-Fi problems on iOS 10 you’ll first want to forget the network causing you problems and try reconnecting to it. Go into your Settings > Wi-Fi > Select your connection > Tap Forget this Network at the top of the screen. Reconnect if you can and check speeds.

If this fails, it’s time to reset your network settings. To do this, head into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

It should only take a few seconds to complete though you’ll lose your known passwords. Make sure you have your Wi-Fi passwords handy before you do this.

If none of these fixes work for you, you can head here for some other potential fixes. Apple’s also got its own guide to Wi-Fi problems available so make sure to look there too.

How to Fix Touch ID Problems

If your Touch ID starts acting up after installing the iOS 10 update, don’t panic. Touch ID issues are extremely common and there are potential fixes for fingerprints not reading and issues with Touch ID in the App Store.

If your Touch ID suddenly stops working with iOS 10, the first thing to do is re-train your fingerprints. Make sure dirt and sweat are removed from the Touch ID sensor and that oil is removed from your hands. You want a nice clean print.

After that’s done go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Enter your Passcode. On the next screen swipe from right to left on each fingerprint to delete them. When this is complete you can tap on Add a Fingerprint… to re-train your Touch ID.

iPhone-6s-Plus-Touch-ID

If your iOS 10 Touch ID problems pertain to the App Store, here’s a possible fix. First go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Enter your Passcode.

After that, turn off iTunes & App Store. Reboot your iPhone or iPad. Go back to Touch ID & Passcode in Settings and turn iTunes & App Store back on. This has fixed Touch ID issues for us, and others in the past.

If Touch ID stops working altogether, you can try resetting the phone by holding down the home button and the power button (volume down and power button on an iPhone 7/iPhone 7 Plus) for 10 seconds or until the phone restarts.

If that quick fix fails, you might want to try a factory reset. The instructions can be found at the bottom of this page. It’s a long process but its a known fix for major Touch ID problems.

How to Fix iOS 10 Data Problems

iOS 10 users are already complaining about cellular data problems and we expect complaints to pick up (as they always do) in the weeks ahead.

These, like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues, can be difficult to nail down and fix but there are a few remedies to try if you start experiencing trouble.

First, you’ll want to make sure your service provider isn’t experiencing an outage. Outages are common and you’ll want to check social media and your carrier’s website for details.

If you’re positive it’s not an outage, try restarting your device. Power it down and then power it back on to see if that helps.

iOS-10-vs-iOS-9-Walkthrough-7

If it doesn’t flip on Airplane Mode for 30 seconds before turning it off. Airplane Mode kills all connections on your device and this quick fix has settled cellular data issues for some users in the past.

We also recommend toggling off Cellular Data and/or LTE to see if that helps alleviate your problem. To shut LTE down temporarily, go into Settings > Cellular > Enable LTE > Off. Turn it back on when/if you need it.

To shut off Cellular Data completely without turning off any other services go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > Toggle Off. Toggle it back on a 30 seconds later to see if things have improved.

How to Fix iOS 10 Touchscreen Problems

If your device’s screen stops responding with iOS 10 on board, you don’t need to head to an Apple Store. Yet.

Touchscreen issues are common and they can pop up at any time. If you start experiencing issues with iOS 10 and your device, take these steps.

If your iPhone/iPad’s screen stops responding to touches and swipes, you’ll want to hold down the power button and home button (volume down and power button on an iPhone 7/iPhone 7 Plus) at the same time. Your phone will reboot in a few seconds and the problems should be gone.

If it doesn’t work the first time, try it again until it works. In the past, its taken three hard reboots for touchscreen lag issues to disappear on our devices.

How to Fix iOS 10 App Problems

iOS 10 and some apps aren’t getting along. In some cases, developers are telling iPhone and iPad users to avoid the update completely until fixes can be found. Others have already rolled out support updates for Apple’s new software.

If you’re running into a problem with a third-party application, you’ll want to check to see if there is an iOS 10 support update lurking on the App Store. There’s a good chance the developer’s issued an update that comes with iOS 10 features and fixes. Just make sure you read reviews from iOS 10 users before you install.

If you’re on the latest version and you’re running into issues you can’t fix, try reinstalling the application. Make sure all of your data is backed up before you do this.

If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to contact the developer and report the issue so that it can fix the problem in a future update.

iOS-10-music

If your problem is with an app download from the App Store, try restarting your device. If you’re connected to the internet and your app isn’t downloading, hold down the power button and home button (volume down and power button on an iPhone 7/iPhone 7 Plus) and restart your phone or tablet.

If the download is still stuck, rapidly tap “Update” on an app before the “Open” symbol appears. It might take 10 times or more for the download to get unstuck so you’ll need to be patient.

How to Improve iOS 10 Performance

If you are dealing with iOS 10 performance issues like lag, you’ll want to consult our list of tips to improve the fluidity of iOS.

These can be difficult to fix, particularly on older devices like the iPhone 5, and you might just have to bite the bullet and perform a factory reset.

How to Fix iOS 10 Messages Problems

The iOS 10 update brings new features to the Messages app though many of the iOS 10 Messages problems we’re seeing are old and extremely common.

If Messages starts acting up in any way, we recommend shutting it off for a minute and turning it back on. Go into Settings > Messages > Toggle iMessage off then back on.

If you’re still having issues sending or receiving messages, restart your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to see if that helps.

If it doesn’t, head into your settings and reset Network Settings. Head into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Have your Wi-Fi passwords handy because this will cause your device to forget them.

How to Fix iOS 10 Problems If Nothing Else Works

If your iOS 10 problem isn’t listed here or these fixes don’t help, there are a few other solutions we recommend.

If you want to continue to try and diagnose the problem from your chair, head to Apple’s discussion forums and ask for help. Just make sure you do it in the right place. If you’re unable to find a fix there, it’s time to take a more drastic approach.

ios-10-beta-downgrade-instructions

You can try downgrading to a previous version of iOS to see if that improves performance. There’s no guarantee that it will but there’s also no guarantee that it won’t.

If you’re fed up and still don’t want to move from your chair, you can do a factory reset or restore from a backup.

A factory reset will wipe everything on your phone or tablet and return it back to the way it was when you first bought the device so you’ll need to make sure anything and everything you care about (photos, videos, etc) is backed up properly.

To perform a full on factory reset on iPhone or iPad go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Again, this should only be used as a last resort.

iPhone-7-release-prep-Apple-Store-Trade-in-

If you’re fine with leaving the house, we recommend taking your device into your local Apple Store. Schedule an appointment at the Genius Bar and see if the geniuses there can diagnose your iOS 10 problem.

If you’d rather get in touch with Apple online, ping Apple Support via its Twitter account.

Install iOS 10.1.1 If You Want Better Security

If you failed to make the move to iOS 10.1 before the iOS 10.1.1 release and you value your security, you'll want to seriously consider the iOS 10.1.1 update. If you failed to download iOS 10.1 know that iOS 10.1.1 brings iOS 10.1's 12 security patches along with it. These patches enhance the security on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch making them ideal for those of you who store sensitive files/data on your device. Most people do.Apple's iOS 10.1.1 update comes with those patches and it also brings the patches from Apple's previous versions of iOS 10. If you haven't downloaded iOS 10 yet, you'll get all of those baked in. This is important, particularly for those of you on something older than iOS 9.3.5. If you failed to install Apple's iOS 9.3.5 update, iOS 10.1.1 will also bring the three crucial security patches it delivered earlier this year. These patch up serious security problems that could potentially expose your calls, contacts, texts, and emails. If security is important to you, iOS 10.1.1 is probably worth a download right now.
