Google plans to create a separate mobile index for its search engine, the company announced this week. And it plans to make that index its primary one.
Gary Illyes, a webmaster trends analyst with Google, made the announcement in a keynote address at Pubcon, a digital marketing conference in Las Vegas. However, Illyes was short on details. We don’t know if the mobile index will include only mobile-friendly content or what will happen to the desktop index once it becomes secondary.
Google says the change could happen by the end of the year. Mobile searches overtook desktop queries a long time ago but the search engine still sees substantial volume from desktops given how popular Google is overall. Illyes says the change is necessary based on how different mobile sites operate and handle content from a search perspective.
